Manual uninstall of Parallels Tools?

Because of problems installing Parallels Tools, I have abandoned trying to upgrade to PD v4 and am using PD v3 5626. Whenever I start it, it tries and fails to install Parallels Tools - which is already installed and, as far as I can tell, working. I thought it might be a good idea to uninstall and reinstall Parallels Tools, but I can't - when I try to uninstall using Control Panel, nothing happens. Is there a manual method to uninstall Parallels Tools?

Yes, you can uninstall Parallels Tools manually:

1. Start your Windows Virtual Machine.

2. Go to "My Computer" > "C" Drive > "Program Files" > "Parallels" folder and delete the "Parallels Tools" folder, if present.

3. Click the Windows "Start" menu -> "Run" and type "regedit". Hit OK.

4. In Registry Editor, go to "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Parallels" and delete the "Parallels Tools" entry, and go to "My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Parallels" and delete the "Parallels Tools" entry.

5. Reboot Windows Virtual Machine.

6. Now try to install Parallels Tools from the "Virtual Machine" menu on the Parallels Desktop menubar when Windows is running.
 
Thank you for giving me the general idea. It wasn't quite that easy, since several of the Parallels Tools files were locked and couldn't be deleted. Also, there were several other registry entries. But with the use of utilities and after a few reboots, I finally had Parallels Tools uninstalled. The bad news is that it didn't help, and now I can't reinstall.

I'm getting the same error code as I was prior to uninstalling Parallels Tools -- (-5009: 0x80040702).

What next?

I am so confused. I am running Parallels 7 with Windows 7, and was having trouble uninstalling Parallels Tools. I followed these instructions to manually uninstall Parallels tools, but strangely when I restarted, Parallels is still saying that Parallels Tools is installed. How is that possible?
