Mass Effect doesn't work

Has anyone gotten Mass Effect to work? For some maddening reason it won't for me. It's like the 3D textures won't load at all. I'm using the latest Parallels and Mass Effect versions, with a highest end MacBook Pro from last summer and Windows XP. For things like the menu screen a 3D spaceship will flash for a second and then altogether disappear. The same happens with the character creation models. I also have extreme difficulty clicking anything.

This really doesn't make much sense as this is a fairly old game being played on a computer that should be able to destroy its requirements. Allotting 1 gig for video and 4 gigs for ram doesn't change this.

I'd greatly appreciate any help or advice.
 
wish I could help, as I do know Mass Effect 1 once played fine on my 2011 Lion Mac with Windows XP. These days, graphics/shadows flicker... crashes on new game, I don't even get to character creation screen.

Reinstalling game/xp didn't help. Sometimes install details for ME1 mention error at something. But says it successfully installed anyhow.

Although I'll note that I didn't have problems with ME1 until I installed ME2, which had some graphics issues with the humans' heads. Not sure if they are related.
