Memory used

I've been running Parallels pretty much since I got my MacBook in 2007. I'm up to version 7. The issue that I have is the amount of memory on the hard drive that the virtual machine is taking. The virtual machine created is a 60 GB machine with about half of it filled with programs. So when I run it (in Windows XP) it says that I have lots of free space to add more things, which at the moment I don't need to do. On my Mac hard drive however it is taking up 118+ GB of space. What is all that space being used for? and how do I get rid of the unused portions of it so I have more space on my MacBook, without having to reinstall all of the programs that are on the virtual drive right now? I've tried cloning the drive (in order to make a backup) and the clone uses up 118 GB of storage on the back up drive. I've created new virtual drives (one for Windows 7) that has 23.9 GB free of a 63.9 GB drive and only uses 45 GB of my Mac hard Drive's space.

E-mailing tech support has been fruitless since they have given me no response. Any thoughts on how to retrieve my Mac's hard drive space would be appreciated.

Snapshots

I think you hit the nail right on the head. I looked into Managing Snapshots and I had about 8 different snapshots dating back to 2009, with the last one having a 2010 date. I've begun to progressively delete them from the earliest to the latest. It takes a while, but the size of the pvm file on my hard drive is shrinking.

Now I have to decide, once I've finished whether to create another snapshot to keep what I have, or just stick with the clone on another drive.

Thanks. I don't see why Parallels people couldn't have told me that.

Hi,

I'm glad to help. Please note that a Parallels's snapshot is not a fully copy of the virtual disk. I uses a incremental approach which means that a newly created snapshot will need actually a small amount of disk space. Give it a try and keep using this great mechanism Parallels offers to rollback just in case.
