Menu items blinking when playing video camera

When I go to Media->Open Capture Device and access the webcam with /dev/video0 the video camera seems to work but the menu subitems start blinking so fast I can't actually read the menu items. Anyone seen this before?

I thought that it may be a problem with the 3D acceleration but when I turn off 3D acceleration and power up Ubuntu; the Launcher disappears. 2 different problems I suppose. Here are the relevant details.


Macbook Pro 15" retina 10.9.1
Nvidia GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac 9.0.24172
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
VLC 2.0.8
 
This problem went away when I installed the Nvidia binary X.Org driver 'version 173'

Just go to the Ubuntu Software Center and search for Nvidia.
