Migrating Virtual PC 7 Image to Parallels 5

I am trying to migrate a VPC 7 XP image to work as a guest under Parallels 5. The migration appears successful except that the XP guest does not have a network adapter and so I can't get network access via Shared Networking. I have installed (and reinstalled) Parallels Tools but there is still no network adapter in the XP device manager, and no network adapter in the main Parallels Devices menu.

I tried to add a network adapter via the Add Hardware wizard and I am able to select a Parallels Ethernet Adapter version 5.0.9344 (3/5/2010), but the device properties gives the message: "The device cannot start (code 10)"

NOTE: After searching for other posts re this I uninstalled the Virtual PC Additions and re "transported" the VPC to Parallels. Same result. No network adapter.

Any guidance to resolve this is welcome.

I solved this. I was able to add the network adapter from the tools drop down in the lower right hand corner of the pre-start-up guest VM window.
 
Usability issue, really

First off, many many thanks for posting this. We had a VPC XP image we were migrating today and for the life of us couldn't figure it out.

Really, this is a Parallels usability problem - when we tried to add the network adapter in the "Configure..." form, pressing the '+' button just made the 'OK' button flash. The root problem is that you can't add those devices while the Guest OS is running, but there's no indication to that effect. A simple popup would have saved us several hours of grief :(
 
newbie advice_

I am new to this as well, but I learned a few lessons. You have added an adapter and thats great. I have also had to add components.

I have been on a Mac for a few years now, and I had forgotten about windows activation. You know, when you upgrade your physical machine about three times you may be told that you have three days to reactivate your copy of windows or it will be ? hatcheted, burned, busted, etc ?

In a virtual machine, it is so easy to change the hard drive (just drag a slider) , add a network adapter, add a cd, this and that. Don't change it too much or you may have to reactivate your virtual machine! I had a bit of a problem, the telephone help guys at Microsoft (Indian speaking guy - hard to understand) were telling me "you can't do that." I was worried I was going to lose my copy of windows.

The activation screen said to not change your activation code (Don't push that radio button!) unless told to do so by a representative. I ran out of phone minutes talking to the guy, so left sitting in front of the buttons, I pushed it anyway and reactivated my copy of windows. The next week my computer crashed for the first time ever and I had no backup. (I know....) After reloading my OS, and the VM, I reactivated easily with the internet activation. My advice , if the internet activation is not available, avoid the guys on the phone.

Newbie reminder, if your computer crashes you will lose more than one computer with all your VMs - backup often!!!
