Missing or Corrupt System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys file

Hi All,

I am running Parallels 3.0 (build 5160) on a 2.33GHz MBP. While using it this morning XP suddnely halted and presented the error "Windows could not start because the System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys file is missing or corrupt. It then suggests trying to repair the file by using the original XP setup disk and running the Repair function.

Trouble is I can't get XP to boot from the CD in the Parallels environment.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? Any ideas why this file may have suddenly corrupted? I was using Explorer on the Internet at the time the crash ocurred.

Hi Stacey,

Yes. When VM restarts it tries to boot windows and presents the error message described.

I had a thought about my problem. Microsoft's solution to a missing or corrupt ntfs.sys file is to use recovery console to copy the file onto the hard drive from the Windows Setup Disk. Is there anyway to do this from OS X? I mean, where does Parallels keep the Windows drive and is it visible (read/write) from OS X?

It is starting to appear as if my only solution is to uninstall Parallels then re-install it and force a fresh Windows install?

Hello,

I think that you have already read this article. So you need to connect Windows Setup Disk to Parallels. You can do it by creating an ISO image. Follow the instructions written here.
