MS-Dos VMs

I had zero trouble installing from floppy images. The ones I found had a suffix of .IMA, but they were right size, so I renamed them to .fdd, made floppy disk first in the boot order, and all went as hoped for. I did not need to manually partition the drive or anything, it formatted it during MS-DOS setup. (This was going with the defaults of the OS under Other > MS-DOS 6.22 when setting up a machine manually.)

I was very pleased to find this thread - even if it is a bit old now - because it helped me set up an MSDOS VM again. The one thing I can't get it do at the moment is read floppy drive A:. I have a USB floppy disk drive plugged into the iMac and theoretically mapped to the VM but it won't "see" it. Is the "dinosaur" still around and perhaps could point me in the right direction?
I tried to do this, but no matter what I choose at the warning dialogue, it always gets automatically reset to 32 MB of RAM.
