Network access after IP address change

My boss just bought 3 Macs to use in his house and while travelling and (upon my recommendation a few weeks ago) had support install Parallels on all of them. Now I'm vaguely stuck having to support him

One of the issues he ran into is when the IP address of the Mac changed, the Windows session lost the connection and wouldn't reconnect until we manually closed the TCP/IP connection and reopened it. (IPCONFIG / Release and Renew worked sometimes but not always).
How can Parallels be configured so that when the Mac IP address changes, the Windows session IP address is automatically renewed?

Secondly, given that the IP address on the Windows machine can be different each session, how can the connection be "named" so that on the Mac side, one can SMB to a shared folder on Windows without knowing the new Windows IP address?

I have the same problem.
Travelling between offices and home with my laptop, I have to restart Windows in Parallel to pick up internet connection.

You don't have to restart Windows. You can just disable and reenable the TCP/IP connection in Windows. But my point is that one shouldn't have to do that either.

For Windows XP guest with Parallels Tools installed you can disconnect/reconnect virtual cable:
Click on the network icon in the status bar then click "Disconnect" in the popup menu. One more click on the network icon then "Connect".
This will force Windows DHCP client to reacquire IP address.

regarding your question about dynamic IP addresses... That's what dynamic DNS and SMB workgroups are for -- to map host names to IP addresses. Accessing your VMs by name should work automagically. Browsing for Windows machines may be sometimes flaky but
smbclient [-U <username>] //<myXPvm>/<ShareName>
should always work.

Imagine you're a non-technical user - this is complicated - it needs to be automatic.
