Networking 'Within'

Hi there all,

I have a MACBook Pro with the latest Paralells installed. I have Win XP for two apps and Linix for another.

I can see the MAC shared stuff within XP but I can't see the Windows shares in OSX. (Should I?)

In Windows I can't see the Linux shares, in Linux I can't see either the OSX shares or the Windows shares.

I realise I have to have all the host OS'es open, which I do. Drag and drop works from OSX to Windows fine.

Can anyone give me guidance as to networking between my OS'es?

Hi, please don't use the abbreviation "MAC" to mean "Macintosh". In a network context a MAC is something else (and never short for "Macintosh", why would it be?).

What IP addresses do your machines have? The Mac shared folders you see in Windows are put there by Parallels internally, they do not use your network.

First, check the IP addresses of your machines, then try pinging them.

Many thanks for drawing to my attention the distinction between MAC as in Macintosh and MAC as in Media Access Control. As I posted my question in the Paralells Desktop for MAC section it was reasonable to assume that when using the word MAC in the context that it was used, that it would be understood by all reading it. Clearly I was wrong. Oh well.... As to the problem, yes I did try to ping but alas with no success of a reply hence the question in the forum.

Hello deljones,

If you want your VM to appear in your network please use Bridged networking. And yes, your VMs must be running.

So, you need to use bridged networking in your Windows and Linux VMs. In this case your Linux and Windows will see each other. And you can see them both from your Mac and your network.
