Hello and bear with my 'greenhorn' knowledge.

I purchased Parallels Desktop 4 for my new IMac - I just downloaded a 14 day trial of Parallels Workstation (which I will buy if this is going to work)

Can I make a backup of the virtual machine in Parallels workstation and then use that backup on my IMac????

it is definitely possible, in your case I would suggest to use Parallels Transporter utility, try the following Kb article
it is not specifically designed for your case but more for all types of virtual machines, still, would work for Parallels Workstation as well.
