New to Parallels, unable to access Desktop?

Hello,

Earlier today I took the plunge and DL'd the trial version of the latest Parallels service and followed the simple steps in accessing Windows through my Mac. I am however coming up against an odd problem in that accessing Windows through Parallel takes me to a blank webpage with the search bar along the top and very little else. I don't appear to have anything else on my screen, no other bars or icons (Start menu) and no desktop. I'm hoping to have the full access to all the basic Windows interface.

Any pointers in reaching that would be greatly appreciated.

You are running windows in coherence mode, switch to window or full screen via the top menu.
 
Unfortunately it seems I can't enter even Coherence Mode (Doing so prompts me to turn off Linux Desktop visual effects - I don't use Linux.) I've been attempting things on and off for most of the day without cracking it. Frustrating.

Can you post screenshots of the problem? I'm not sure I even understand what the problem is exactly.
