Bit poster
New to Mac OS, and therefore to Parallels. Need some handholding to get started.

Need to run a program from the root of a USB flash drive, but get "Program must be in root of drive (not \\psf\VOLUME_NAME)"

But it is in the root of the drive X: see attached screenshot.

Any help appreciated.

In this case, we need to directly connect the external device to Windows Virtual Machine to accomplish our task. Please follow the steps suggested at http://bit.ly/1CPKCuE to Set a Particular External Device to Always Be Used With Mac OS X or Windows.
