Newbi - run parallels desktop without xp installation after virtual disk importation

Dear Community,

I am neither a Mac nor a Windows expert - spent now countless hours trying to get this to work but without success :-(((. Long nights made me now tired.....

1) I am running 3.0 Build 1456 on a MacBook

2) I successfully transported the entire HD from my windows PC over ethernet. This created the virtual disk IBM-AF466D42205 with 3 volumes (Volume (1) NTFS, Volume (2) FAT32 and Volume (3) NFTS. The volume 1 contains the I386 folder (I can see this through the parallels explorer)

3) When I go to Parallels Desktop it shows me now the MS Windows XP, Stopped which (I believe) was created during the first time I run the Desktop but where I totally failed to install XP from CD (which I had to created based on recommendation here: http://www.howtohaven.com/system/createwindowssetupdisk.shtml and several forum recommendations including the ISO img disk creation including install-re-installing parallels....).

So installing XP didn't work which is the reason for below question:

If I have all the disk and volumes transported from my PC, go to the configuration editor and select
a) Options - Booting - HardDisk, CD-ROM, Floppy
b) Hard Disk 1 - use image file - image file: .../migrated disks/IBM-AF466D42205.hdd
b) Then run (green button)
Shouldn't that work?

I get to black screen with 'we apologize for inconv, but windows didn't not start successfully....

Start Windows Normally

None of the options work (they all make the screen hang), except safe mode which runs down some some 50 messages
'multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\.......
and stops at
'multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys.

So reading through the forum I found that the mup.sys issue should be solved by repair ( http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=13451&highlight=mup.sys resp http://kb.parallels.com/en/5138

But trying to do so, brings me back to my very initial problem to boot from my CD. Tried with acceleration level disabled, and unclicked 'enable Intel VT-x support'. This brings the blue screen (Windows Setup), is runing through quite a number of files (mostly drivers), reaches 'wait while setup formats the particition' and wait until XP examines your HD' and then I get

'Setup cannot access the CD containing the Windows XP installation files. To retry, press ENTER. If you are not successful after several tries, quite Setup. Then......'

So this didn't work - then I tried to create an ISO image from the CD as suggested in the forum, changed Configuration to CD/DVD-ROM1 = Emulation 'use image file' and point to the WINXP.iso I created which did the exact same job as above just much faster, but ends up again at 'Setup cannot access the CD....

So I am back to square one :-(((((

Above is probably 10% of what I tried and re-tried and I am really getting tired. What else can I do? Any help? Or do I need to install XP seperately from an original CD (which I don't have since the PC came pre-configured?)

Thanks John, and sorry, I didn't check correctly - it is the Transporter that has built 1456, Desktop has 5608. I purchased and downloaded it 1 week ago..... So you say I should download 3224?

well, that brings me back to square one - my IBM PC didn't come with a XP Installation CP (it was pre-installed) and the only article I found about creating a CD was on http://www.howtohaven.com/system/createwindowssetupdisk.shtml. but creating such CD and making an ISO image on the Mac Book runs the installation (blue screen - windows setup until with drivers, adapters, etc, then checking C: drive and thereafter it displays: 'Setup cannot access the CD containing the Windows XP installation files. To retry, press ENTER. If you are not successful after several tries, quite Setup. Then......'.

So it could be that my XP Install CD isn't a good one. what other solutions are there to create a CD with the XP Install package?

I am getting desperate (not to speak about the +50h I invested so far.....)
 
Buy a Windows XP cd (maybe you can still get one on amazon, bestbuy, whatever), since your XP license that you have for your IBM PC is OEM which means that it cannot be transfered to another machine.

If you get a XP CD from a friend or from a known bay in the intertubes that's not legal and I'm not suggesting in anyway you do that, even if it's only for repairing.
 
So you are saying that even though I am in the possession of an official XP Professinal License Key (provided on a sticker on the PC I bought) I can not use parallels unless I buy a new XP version (some USD 250 at amazon....). Wouldn't it be fair that parallels mentions such during the purchase process?

What!? It has nothing to do with Parallels, it's the license terms of Windows, specifically OEM licenses, which are the licenses normally used in pre-installed Windows PCs, that clearly say that it's only valid for the hardware it came in. You're the owner of that license only in that hardware, if you think that's unfair, blame Microsoft.

As for Parallels mentioning that before the purchase, your case is a very specific and non-standard case, and besides Parallels mentions that you have to acquire the Guest OSs yourself.

specimen - you are right, i am more frustrated about Microsoft than parallels...... (so the decision to go with apple now is definitely ok). still - I don't believe my case is very specific, at least not for private users. I just think it would be nice that parallels mentions it to a) avoid the countless hours of trying (especially if you are not a pro...) and makes a specific reference that you better have an original XP CD available which for most OEM licenses is not the case. So its not that you need to purchase the Guest OS yourself (because this you did when you bought an OEM PC) - it is that you need to have the CD in addition to the license key / original installation.

but input appreciated. I'll find a way to get this up- and running.
 
If you moved the Hard Disk from your IBM PC to another PC with different hardware the procedure would be exactly the same including the repair install with a Windows installation CD. I replied to this topic mostly because I have personal experience with this, I have successfully moved hard disks to new (real) hardware and Parallels virtual machine with Windows installed, and it is absolutely essential to have a Windows boot disk that can do repair install and that has at least the generic drivers for the basic hardware.
