I've read all of the "nbda" posts on this forum and I can't seem to find any that involve installing Windows XP. I have followed all of the instructions in the manual and in the forums here about boot order, etc. I have a feeling my Windows XP install CD is not bootable, but I find it hard to believe that there is such a thing as a non-bootable WinXP CD. Is there, and if so, how do I work around it?

when you setup a new VM under the guest configuration, it should be setup for you.

Yes, I chose Windows XP as the Guest OS type when setting up the VM.
And yes, I hear the CD spinning up when I start the VM, and I hit enter a couple times afterward just in case the drive wasn't ready. I've tried putting the CD in both before and after starting the VM, and both times it shows up on the Mac desktop but doesn't boot in Parallels.

another question: did you click inside the VM then hit enter key, When you start the VM in parallels you don't automatically have keyboard focus to the VM.

got the exact same problem.
- installed P on a new macbook (2ghz - 2gb ram - 100gb hd - xternal screen, usb-kb and mouse)
- gave it a new and original xp media cd (which i can see/browse in finder)
- started P
- made a new std. wizard-xp-wm
- started the new wm
- 'no boot device available'
Using the macbook for work and privately but if i cant install p and get access to internet explorer its a showstopper for my brief maccareer

well, if you guys are on the latest beta, maybe you can uninstall and bring in build 1848 which was release version, then install XP and then upgrade to 1884.
I can tell you this, even if you don't believe it, Parallels team sees all these and are working very hard to resolve these issues.

No offense taken...I did click inside the VM window when hitting enter. The message repeats every time I do so.
I'm not sure what build of Parallels I'm using (I'll check when I can get back on the computer I'm trying to install it on), but I re-downloaded the installer from the P Web site to make sure I have the latest version, although there might be a beta that I don't know about.
The computer is a 1.83Ghz iMac Core Duo with 2 GB RAM, by the way.

for version,
click on top menu bar "Parallels Desktop" (when parallels has focus)
then click on the "about Parallels Desktop" and you will see version there

I think Apple is doing a good thing going Intel-Duo-Cores, but i think it needs to slow down just a smidge to let vendors catch up
