no boot device, no operating system

HELP! This has happened several times:
A black box appears that says "no boot device available."
A white box appears that says "There is no operating system installed in the virtual machine. Insert the installation CD of operating system."

The past couple of times that the OS was reinstalled, I lost all data.

I never save data in a VM always in shared folders and back up to an external HD
This helps keep the VM slim, fast and mean

I have not experienced this error
again which version of paralles ?

ropamod, Such situation happens when the hard disk is already partitioned but hasn't yet an Operating System installed. Check that you have your bootable and installation media connected and the appropriative Boot sequence
('CD-ROM, Hard disk, Floppy' or 'Floppy, Hard disk, CD-ROM') is set in the Virtual Machine properties.
