No Sound: Parallels 5.0.9344; XP SP2

I am having a difficulty getting sound working in my XP environment.

In Parallels VW > Configure > Hardware > Sound ... Connected is ticked, Input is 'mixer' and Output is 'dsp' - but all 3 of these are greyed! (Both when XP is running and also after XP is stopped)

I see that previous threads have mentioned changes relating to XP Device Manager - but what is mentioned doesn't seem to fit with what I see in Device Manager, so I am attaching a screenshot of what I see.

I would really appreciate someone helping out with any ideas of what is wrong here, especially if they can also suggest what I need to do to get this working.

I am using a 4 year old MacPro, with Mac OS X 10.6.4. I have tried both inbuilt speakers, and also USB-connected headset.

Thanks for that. I have tried inserting the windows CD , then going to Device manager and scanning for hardware changes (as in thread 31585 above). It sat for a minute scanning, then terminated without finding/installing anything.

I also can't 'remove' the hardware then re-install it, as all the fields in the Parallels Configure Sound panel are greyed.

I'm a bit out of my depth here; some instructions would be much appreciated

I don't understand why you're seeing 'mixer' and 'dsp'. Does your sound settings look like the screen shot at

For input and output device I use Default like in the screen shot. Other possibilities for input device are Built-in Line Input, Built-in Digital Input, Null device. Other possibilities for output device are similar. You should be able to change the input and output when the virtual machine is running and when it's not running. You could try deleting the Sound device when the virtual machine is not running (select Sound in the Virtual Machine -> Configure -> Hardware list and press the [-] button) then re-add the sound device (press [+] and select Sound).

The latest version of Parallels Desktop is 5.0.9370. Try installing that.
 
I didn't understand that either; nor why all the fields on that Configure > Hardware > Sound panel were greyed.

Good news is that the Sound delete worked in Configure, and after adding Sound back, the "Intel(R) 82801AA/AB/BA/CA AC'97 Audio Controller" appeared immediately without me having to do anything ... and a quick test of making a noise worked first time.
