Parallel Tools Install zaps Boot Camp with latest Vista updates

I downloaded a bunch of Vista updates onto my BootCamp partition natively. After I had done this, I tried to start up Vista via Parallels and during the boot a driver was installed by Parallel Tools (advanced graphics is the name or something similar), followed by a successful boot via Parallels. Now, however, when I try to boot from BootCamp, the boot fails just after the desktop appears.

I'm pretty sure the problem is with this driver I mentioned because I've duplicated the situation twice. All is well until Parallels installs this driver.

Any ideas on a fix, or will we have to wait for an update to Parallels or Boot Camp?

I just wanted to add two bits of info regarding this problem - the problems really started after the installation of the "pre-SP1" updates that came out this week. Also, things run fine in Parallels, it's just the booting from Boot Camp that is the problem.

please, try to do the following:

1. Open your Boot Camp virtual machine via Parallels but do not start it
2. Open Configuration Editor
3. In the Resource list, click Hard Disk.
4. In the hard disk settings pane, click the Advanced tab.
5. In the Cleanup Boot Camp Partition area, click the Clear button.
Try to run Boot Camp natively.

Will it solve the issue?
 
I've done as you've suggested, but am wondering if by doing this, I will have killed any files I would need to run in Parallels. Or would the necessary files get reinstalled?
 
Okay, I got brave and tried it out. Unfortunately, it did NOT work. Immediately after booting into the VM successfully, any subsequent boot from Boot Camp crashes right after the desktop appears whether or not I've removed the Parallels info via the Advanced tab in the hard drive configuration.

Other ideas?
 
For the benefit of anyone else looking at these posts, here is the fix provided privately by Parallels Tech Support:

We aware of this problem and our developers are doing their best to fix
it in a short period of time. Please see if this temporary solution
would help you:

1. Please load your Windows OS from your Boot Camp partition in safe
mode.
2. Double-click My Computer.
3. Open Local Disk (C:) then double-click the Program Files folder.
4. Open the Common Files folder, then delete the Installshield folder.
5. Go back into the Program Files folder, then open the Installshield
nstallation Information folder and delete all the files that you have
inside.
6. Close all Web pages and programs.
7. From the desktop, select Start > Run.
8. In the Open field, enter %temp% and click OK.
9. Delete all the files in this temp folder.
10. Load your Mac OS and start Parallels Desktop, but don't start
Windows OS.
11. Click on Edit/Virtual machine from the top Parallels menu.
12. Select Hard Disk 1 from the list of resources and then Advanced tab
from the right side. Click the Clear button there and then Ok.
13. Start your Windows VM using the green arrow button (or
Action/Start).
14. Install Parallels Tools once again using Action/Install Parallels
Tools menu from the top.
 
I have run into the same failure, and have resorted to safe mode booting into Vista in Boot Camp, and removing all traces of Parallels. Unfortunately, I cannot do it all. I ran into "...can't uninstall Parallel Tools unless running as a VM...", then when I tried to regedit Parallels into oblivion, got a "permission denied" while trying to eliminate registry keys for Parallels.

Is there a manual process documented or available for removal of all traces of Parallels while running natively from Boot Camp?

This is in no way a condemnation of Parallels, as I have other VMs running quite happily. I just want to get my Vista Boot Camp instance back to being happy.
