Parallels 3 and Windows Installation Questions - acpi.sys error

I am having trouble installing Windows on my MacBookPro. I had a 64 bit version of Windows installed with Parallels 2 last fall. I now realize that 64 bit versions are not supported, but I did install it last fall and it worked fine. When I upgraded to Leopard 10.5 in November, I did not reinstall Parallels and Windows. I am now trying to add Parallels 3 and Windows for an Apple training I am doing next week.

I wiped my laptop and did a clean install of Leopard 10.5. I installed Parallels 3.0 (5608 build). I tried to install my Windows Professional x64 Edition and it will no longer let me even install it. I also have a Vista upgrade, but with no actual installation, I cannot upgrade.

I went out and bought another copy of Windows - 32 bit XP Professional Edition (AARRGGH) for $300 and now when I try to install it, I am getting the following error:

File acpi.sys caused an unexpected error (512) at line 5964 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\setup.c

I uninstalled Parallels, deleted all preferences, etc. and installed again....same error.

My MBP is on the latest version of Leopard and I have 2 GB RAM for it. The machine is totally clean as I wiped it yesterday and did a clean install of OS X on it.

Any thoughts? Time is critical. I have to have my machine online by tomorrow night for a training I am doing Tuesday, though my Parallels workshop isn't for another week.
 
If you are trying to install Windows in Boot Camp, make sure that Windows XP is at least Windows XP Service Pack 1
If you are trying to install it as VM from Mac OS,
In Configuration editor disable Hardware Acceleration and Intel VT-x support
 
I disabled both the Hardware Acceleration and the Intel VT-x support. This was a bit tricky as it is not in the documentation.

However....same error.
What next?

I should add...I am trying to install it as a VM in Mac OS. I have Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2.
 
What OS type is selected ?
Windows XP or Windows Vista?
Try also to create ISO image as described bellow
1. Insert CD/DVD source

2. Fire up a Terminal, you can then determine the device that is you CD/DVD drive using the following command:

$ drutil status
Vendor Product Rev
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835E GAND

Type: DVD-ROM Name: /dev/disk1
Cur Write: 8x DVD Sessions: 1
Max Write: 8x DVD Tracks: 1

3. Umount the disk with the following command:

$ diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1
Disk /dev/disk1 unmounted

4. Create the ISO file with the dd utility (may take some time):

$ dd if=/dev/disk1 of=file.iso bs=2048

5. Test the ISO image by mounting the new file (or open with Finder):

$ hdid file.iso
 
I am running a brand new install of Leopard - Mac OS 10.5.4 as of an hour ago....clean install. I am trying to install a brand new copy of Windows XP Professional (32) purchased this afternoon. Why do I need to make a copy of the install DVD?
 
Ok. I understand that. I will say that my CD/DVD drive has been working fine as I have been reinstalling software yesterday. I wiped the machine a second time today as these Windows install errors had me panicked. I like my machines clean.

I am not comfortable in Terminal. I tried to do what you listed and it did not work. I also tried using Disk Utility.

I am very frustrated and am about to recommend to my clients that they forget Parallels and just make the switch. I don't think that this should be that hard to set up. I have a brand new OS. My machine has been working great. The only reason I wiped it in the first place was to put Parallels and Windows on it for this training. I have used Parallels and Windows in the past on my Mac. I don't know what is different with Parallels 3.0, but I am very frustrated.

I have spent the entire day dealing with this and am now out $300 for yet another copy of windows. I now have 3 licenses for XP and one vista upgrade --- all for my one PC and what I had hoped was a version working on my Mac. I do training all over the country and will be hard pressed to recommend that folks use this if it is this difficult to set up.

I am giving this about 2 more hours and then moving on. I need my machine back.
 
I just burned a data CD on my laptop and it plays fine in my other computer so the drive must be working okay.

I don't understand how to do the ISO creation in Terminal. I tried what you posted, but it did not work.
 
I did some research and found a website that talked about how to create .iso disk images with Disk Utility.

That appears to have worked. I created the disk image. Then I mounted the disk image and tried to install Parallels again. It appears to be working though it is still in the install process.

Does this suggest that my CD/DVD drive is having trouble with the Windows XP install disk? I can burn CD's and read other disks with it?

I do appreciate your help with this.
 
acpi.sys install error SOLUTION

In my case, it was some sort of disc error, but only during installation. From what I've read there's nothing wrong with the disc or the drive, but the combination of the two causes the error. The solution is to make the CD into an .iso file and tell Parallels to use the file as your CD drive.

1. Insert the Windows CD.
2. Download and run ISOlator 2.0 from http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18634
3. Drag your Windows CD icon to the ISOlater window and choose the location to save your .iso file (like the desktop)
3a. Wait until the spinny icon on ISOlator stops spinning (this could take a few minutes; it's copying the whole CD)
4. Run Parallels and make sure Stop is checked in the Actions menu
5. Choose Edit: Virtual Machine
6. Click CD/DVD-ROM and click the Use Image File radio button
6a. Click the ... button and choose the .iso file that you made with ISOlator
7. Click OK to close the Configuration Editor
8. Press the play button to start up the virtual machine. It will use the .iso file to install instead of the CD (and it will be several times faster, too!)

Borgendorf was right

I had the same error code as stated above. I did exactly what the last post said to do and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the post. It helped me out greatly.
