Parallels 6 crashes my Mac?

Last week I upgraded from Parallels 5 to 6, and immediately ran into big troubles. Upgrading my virtual machines (all Windows 7 Ultimate) was no problem, but when I ran windows update on one of them my entire iMac locked up and i had to shut it down with the power button. When it was locked up/frozen, there were no error messages whatsoever on the screen.
This happened once more, and I also got one "real" crash on my mac, like this:

Parallels 5 has always been rock solid for me, but I now reinstalled my mac from scratch and am reluctant to install version 6 again.

I was able to play with windows 7 under Parallels 6 for a bit, between 2 of the crashes (heh). I connected my mac's isight camera to the virtual machine. When I shut down the vm and wanted to use the cam in Max OS, it said there was no camera connected. This was never a problem with Parallels 5.

Has anyone seen these problems with Parallels 6? Are there fixes/workarounds to make it more stable, or will I be better of installing Parallels 5 again?

I think I might be seeing this as well. I've been getting random locks ups - sometimes I get the Mac Crash graphic but other times just a lock up (no mouse movement, no change in screen, nothing) that requires pressing power for 10 sec.

On the last one I saw parallels referenced in the crash report on restart. I'll capture that next time I see it.

Note: I was suspecting other apps I used (e.g. a keyboard mapper and some utils to size windows but I've uninstalled all those so I'm strongly leaning towards parallels being the culprit now.
 
got the same problem by trying to play the game "Evil Genius"... I simply tested it with an other Tool and it works ^^ hope it will be fixed ^^

The crash report should still exist. Check the location mentioned in the linked Apple knowledge base article.

Create a report in Parallels Desktop and make sure the report includes the panic information.
 
I'm having the same problem.

Upgraded from desktop 5 to 6 the other week. I've never experienced any kernel panic issues with 5 but they started to occur after I upgraded to 6. I've installed the latest upgrade to 6 but this didn't seem to fix the problem.

I've located the kernel panic log files but they don't mean anything to me. Is there something I should be looking for in these logs to try an resolve the problem?

The panic log lists which kernel extensions were most likely involved when the kernel crashed by looking at the addresses in the backtrace (or call stack). http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#technotes/tn2002/tn2063.html

If one of the kernel extensions listed is a Parallels kernel extension (prl_hid_hook, prl_hypervisor, prl_netbridge, prl_usb_connect, prl_vnic), then the Parallels developers can use the panic log to figure out where in the code the problem might be.

It looks like I have a clean sweep on those extensions. I have copied that section out of the log below.

Is there a process I should follow to alert the developers to this issue?

I have a number of log from previous crashes that could also send.

Is that info from the panic log? Can you post the entire panic log? Those kexts are loaded (which is normal) but it doesn't say they were in the backtrace.

I'm not sure how you would get the info to the developers. If you try the "Report a Problem" option in the Help menu, then select "See Details", are the panic logs listed? There doesn't seem to be a way to add other files. The logs don't include personal info so you could post them in a thread here and mention the thread in the report and also mention the report ID after you send it to Parallels in the thread.

It doesn't list any Kernel loadable modules in the backtrace. Nothing in there indicates that Parallels is the problem. Of course, nothing in there indicates that Parallels is not the problem either...

I googled for "unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock". Some people say it might be the Cisco driver or Microsoft drivers. You don't have Microsoft drivers but you do have a Cisco driver. Try uninstalling the Cisco stuff.

If you're using the Cisco client for VPN access, then you could try switching to Snow Leopard's own Cisco VPN client. It works very well for me.

It's funny my system will remain stable until I run parallels. At some point after that it will crash.

I'll uninstall the cisco vpn client and see if that makes a difference.

@joevt, I don't have the panic log anymore. I did a complete reinstall of my Mac, now with Parallels 5 and it is rock solid again.
Should I ever encounter a crash again, I'll make sure to save the log to post (parts of) it here.

Starting my Win 7 VM caused my Mac OS X system to crash and reboot. Running other VMs have also had issues. This latest update has issues.

I logged into a vpn session this morning and my system has been stable all day. I'm haven't run parallels at all today.

I'm thinking desktop 6 is the issue.

Do you know if it is easy to go back to 5 or would I need to follow GeneralF lead and reinstall the OS?

I'm having similar problems since upgrading to P6. My Windows 7 VM hangs occasionally, my Mac is slow when the VM is running, and I've had my Mac crash a couple of times, most recently just now. I had the MacBook Pro powered on with the lid closed since Friday and the VM running. I opened the lid, waited for the VM to wake up, heard the sound of the optical drive being accessed, and the Mac rebooted.

A kernel panic was not recorded.

I wonder if it might be a combination of Cisco and Desktop 6? In that case, going back to 5 will work, but maybe using Leopard's Cisco client instead will also work?

To go back to Parallels 5: Use the Control Panel Add/Remove programs to uninstall Parallels Tools from the VM. Shutdown the VM properly. Use the Uninstall app on the Parallels Desktop 6 installation disk. Restart. Install Parallels Desktop 5.

I have logged a suport job with parallels regarding PD6.
