Parallels Bootcamp Errors?

Hi,

I recently bought a Macbook Pro and installed Windows 7 on a Bootcamp Partition. Switching between Bootcamp and Mac OS is getting awfully tiresome and time consuming, so I bought Parallels. I was hoping to be able to use Bootcamp through Parallels, but was struck at the fact that the Bootcamp Partition could not be accessed as a VM through Parallels. The error message says the following:

rror: PRL_ERR_DISK_FILE_OPEN_ERROR (0x80021014)
Path: '/Users/USERNAME/Documents/Parallels/Windows 7.pvm/Hitachi HTS543232L9SA02 (disk0).hdd'

I am wondering what this error is and how I can fix it so I can use my Bootcamp while on my Mac!

Hi,
please do the following, so we can check your issue and try to help :
1. Start Parallels Desktop
2. Run BootCamp VM and wait until your error appears
3. Do not close Parallels Desktop
4. Go to menu "Help" -> "Report a problem"
5. Wait until report is generated.
6. Write description of the problem and send the report. You will see your report ID.
7. Post the report number here.

I am getting the same error (0x80021014) as Ethan when I am trying to do a first-run of parallels, although my bootcamp is a separate disk on my mac pro (windows 7). I have already uninstalled parallels, repaired permissions, and re-installed, to no avail.

I get the error:
Error: PRL_ERR_DISK_FILE_OPEN_ERROR (0x80021014)
Path: '/Users/USERNAME/Documents/Parallels/Windows 7.pvm/WDC WD2500BS-55RPB1 (disk0).hdd'

I have a report id of:

7302334

If you can reduce the amount of ram used, reduce it down to 2Gigs or lower. Please post results. I have the same issue with another configuration.

It actually happens before I could set the memory for the vm. When you first run parallels 6, I get the error("failed to configure the Boot Camp partition's hard disk.") when first starting the application--before I even have a chance to specify a vm. So, for me at least, it doesn't seem to be an issue with the amount of memory assigned to the vm.

(Or were you asking me to take out the memory from the mac pro? I currently have 16gb installed, but I could make an attempt to remove it if you think it might be the issue....)
 
A Solution!

I think that I found the solution to the error (0x80021014) for me. Here's what I did to find out what was going on.

After snooping around a bit, i found that I had a problem unmounting the Bootcamp drive, which required me to do a 'force unmount'. This led me to ask what was going on. You can do this for yourself by opening up the Terminal and running the following command:

sudo lsof -xf +d /Volumes/whatever

Where whatever is the name of your Boot Camp volume as it appears in the Finder. (You can also just drag the volume over to the terminal window and it will fill in the /volumes/whatever as appropriate.) This command will print out a list of any processes that hold an open file descriptor on anything inside that mountpoint. When I did that, I found that an application (in my case, a recent update to mozy) was not allowing the volume to unmount. I then re-configured the application (making sure in my case that my BC volume was explicitly added to the list of things NOT to back up) and voila.

Now when I launched parallels it began to configure the BC VM, and it appears to be successfully running.

PRL_ERR_DISK_FILE_OPEN_ERROR (0x80021014)

I get the same error when trying to create a VM using the boot camp partition.

I can mount or unmount the BC partition without issue. Win7 runs just fine (when booted via BC) but Parallels can't create the VM using it.

This happens if I give the VM 1 GB or 8 GB of RAM (or 2, or 4), if I give it 1 cpu or 4 or if I try anything else that might make a difference - I get the same error.
