Parallels tools broken on recent Ubuntu 12.04 LTS update

I just ran an update on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64 in Parallels 9 Desktop for Mac, and it induced two problems:

  1. Parallels can't give Ubuntu the Mac's display resolution (MBPr 15" latest edition)
  2. Mouse no longer being recognized

On login, I get an error dialog popup:

Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors

none of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes:
Trying for modes CRTC 79
CRTC 79: trying mode 800x600@75Hz with output at 2880x1800@60Hz (pass 0)
CRTC 79: trying mode 800x600@75Hz with output at 2880x1800@60Hz (pass 1)

Screen resolution is basic, and mouse not recognized. Anyone know what the problem might be?

Ubuntu version: Linux ubuntu 3.13.0-32-generic #57~precise-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 15 03:51:20 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Parallels version: Build 9.0.24237 (Revision 1028877; Wednesday, July 2, 2014)
 
I got the exact same problem with 14.04 LTS.
