Parallels tools fails install, mouse/keyboard frozen

Product: Parallels Desktop 7
OS: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Macbook Pro)

When Parallels is installed I manage to launch my Windows XP Boot Camp partition and I can see the desktop. However, that's about how far I get. The Parallels tools installation freezes at 53% and I can't get the mouse cursor in Windows to move at all. I can't use the keyboard to maneuver around either.

Very few seem to have had this error, or at least it's hard to find a solution on the web. I tried this tip telling me to enable the Smart Mouse function but it was already set to "auto" so no fix there.

How do I solve this? Is there any connection between the parallels tools and the ability to move the mouse cursor, or is this two separated problems?

Solution 1

Stop the Dropbox application. Refer to the link below for instructions on how to disable Dropbox in different operating systems:

Note: Once Parallels Tools are installed, you may enable the Dropbox application again.

Solution 2

1. Stop Parallels Tools installation process.

2. Shutdown Windows but keep Parallels Desktop open.

3. Go to Virtual Machine configure. To open Configuration Editor, in Virtual Machine list, right click (control+click or control+shift+click) on Virtual Machine name and select Configure or click on Virtual Machine tab on top and select Configure.

4. Go to Hardware tab and select Printer.

5. Disable the "Add all Mac printers" check-box and close the Configuration window.

6. Start Windows and try installing Parallels Tools.

Note: Once Parallels Tools are installed, you may enable the same check-box back.
