I recently upgraded to 4.0. When trying to install Parallels Tools, the setup wizard runs through and then freezes at the end. The message says "This may take several minutes" and the status bar is all green. I left this running for several hours but nothing happened. Any tips?

Same for me: I've installed Parallels Desktop 4.0.3846 for Mac and wanted to create a virtual machine from my Windows XP SP3 BootCamp partition. The configuration hangs at step 4 of 4 (installation of Parallels Tools) with the progress bar almost reaching the end. Before I started the installation of Parallels Tools from within Windows, I de-actived the Virus Scanner.
I've also tried de-installation and re-installation of Parallels with a fresh creation of the VM three times without any progress.

I upgraded to v4.0 fine, got into the VM and watched it install the drivers (except for an Ethernet driver it couldn't find), then hit the button to install Parallels Tools -- and waited 3 hours. It is hung with a full progress bar and says "Installing the latest version of Parallels tool (Step 4 of 4)..."
I did NOT uninstall Kaspersky on my guest OS because nothing in the instructiona said I needed. My Mac (2.8 GHZ Core 2 Duo iMac running 10.5.8) has no AV on it.
What now? Can I Force Quit and start over?
I can't upload any files because I can't get into the VM!

I FOUND THE ANSWER:
The hang up is because Windows is showing an "Untrusted Publisher" alert for the Parallels Tools drivers, because they are not properly signed. The automated upgrade/install program can't detect the error, apparently, so it can't tell you there is a problem. It just sits.
SOLUTION: When the PT install stalls, switch to the installer's Manual mode by clicking the lock icon in the installer window (next to the large-type heading). When you see the Windows Desktop and the red warning dialog, hit "Install this driver anyway." You will have to do this several times, once for each unsigned driver. Do not restart the Windows guest OS and ignore and close any other dialogs, like "Could not find driver" or "please restart" -- you have to wait for the installer to stop working.
PD People: You can fix this by using properly signed drivers!

I seem to have the same problem as Paul. My installation freezes at the end of copying files, but I don't seem to have the same driver notifications as he's talking about. As such, I'm not really sure which "lock" button can switch over to a manual install (in the solution he posted).
Restarting either the virtual machine (windows xp) or my mac does not work. How can I get the installation to finish?

Paul's solution (below) probably works for many other situations where Windows pops up an alert and the Parallels installer gets stalled interminably. This happened to me at steps 2, 3 and 4 of converting a version 3 WinXP VM to version 4.
The lock icon at the right was not present at first, but after long enough, it appeared. After clicking on it and switching to "manual" mode, I was back in the WinXP window and I could dismiss the WinXP alert (in my case: Windows Genuine Advantage believed I was using Windows on new hardware and wanted me to reactivate Windows).
TO RECAP: If VM conversion gets stalled [*]:
-- Look for the padlock icon to the right of the large-type headline, "Click here if you have any questions or issues...."
-- Click on the padlock.
-- Click Yes if prompted about "do you really want to switch to manual mode?"
-- Windows should appear again. Dismiss any alerts.
-- In my experience, the Parallels conversion restarted at the next step as soon as the Win alert was canceled. Your mileage may vary.
