So at the end of the install, you were back at the desktop and did a shutdown dow to a black shell and after ejecting the CD, and restarting pclinuxos, it booted up OK ?

Towards the end of the install, when it asks where to put the boot information, what did you do ?

I've tried both h/d boot options ad it still 'hangs' at the boot

So HOW did you get it to work ?

I just did install, selected OS type Mandriva, and boot record to be placed in MBR, and ejected CD, nothing else.
by the way did you check undo disks?
