Prevent spaces from switching desktop when windows does something?

So if a tooltip pops up on my windows system tray while I'm in Coherence mode spaces will auto-switch from what I'm doing to a different desktop (generally a desktop w/a windows window open).

Is it possible to disable this? It's irritating when I'm IMing someone - then it switches to a different desktop b/c outlook gets a new email, or a tooltip pops up.

Spaces have problems with many programs (Office 2008 being the biggest irritant). There are somewhere on the web more details on how to make them less irritating by setting hidden preferences. You can start easily by disabling the checkbox in their preferences which switches the space when switching to application. You may have to search for the space with application windows yourself, but at least it will not "swoosh" (that is the term I saw for this behavior) around like mad...
