Problem (bug?) printing to non-default Mac printer (5582)

Hello,

Basicmonkey, we could not include the fix in the build 5584 - our apologies.
But the issue is reproduced and is going to be eliminated.
Thank you for the report.

Best regards,
Xenos

Dealing with the annoyance ...

hello all,

if you have booted parallels and did not have the correct printer selected as default, i have found a way to select a different printer without having to reboot the vm.

1. under parallels desktop ... devices menu, disconnect parallel 1.
2. open printers and faxes in the windows vm.
3. right click on the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS and select Use Printer Offline.
4. in mac os x system preferences, select print and fax.
5. set "Selected Printer in Print Dialog" (a.k.a. default printer) to printer you want to use in windows vm.
6. under parallels desktop ... devices menu, reconnect parallel 1 to default printer.
7. right click on the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS and select Use Printer Online.

i know it seems like a lot of steps, but for me it is much easier than restarting the vm and all the applications i use. hopefully, we will see an update resolving this soon!

I too, await a speedy solution to this problem, I print checks from a special local printer from XP that I have kept stocked with checks for years. Having to 'deselect' this printer each time I print in Mac OS is a poor solution, as any time I might miss the 'deselect' I print over a valuable check. Keep us posted!

Thanks.

I too have this problem (or similar). Build 5608. LPT2 configured to my Canon USB printer. Apple Color LW 12/660 PS driver configured to LPT2. Still prints to LPT1. Actually, it prints to LPT1 regardless of which printer is my default OS X printer, and regardless of which printer is my default Windows printer.

hey everybody ... guess what?!?
i just upgraded to build 5608 and ...
i still have the same problem!
great support parallels team!
this bug is definitely beyond annoying now.

wow ...
has it already been almost a year since this bug was reported?

Yup, looks like I originally reported the issue about 10 months ago now. They've had plenty of time to fix it. This is just really poor support for an easily replicated bug.

I've been testing VMware Fusion 2.0 for about 4 days now. It's got a few issues of it's own, but the printing works great. It just automatically configures the printers in the guest Windows that are listed in the host Mac OS, you don't have to worry about setting up specific models, etc. Plus you can even have a different default printer in the guest OS than is set in the host. Unless a show stopper appears over the next few days (which I doubt), at this point I'm not planning to go back to Parallels.

VMware has a free 30 day trial, and they offer a competitive upgrade from Parallels rebate. I'd recommend giving it a try.
