Problem with VMTools, Guest Windows 98 SE, Parallels 4.0

I'm trying to get Windows 98SE running on Parallels Desktop 4 (May 9, 2009 build). I tried to install the vm tools, but I get this oddball error PSAPI.DLL not found error when I try to boot it up. AFAIK, this is a Win2k/XP type of file and not something you find on Windows98. What I would like to do is get the sound driver running under the Windows 98 guest.

The vmtools.iso that I've seen in other instructions doesn't exist in the library/parallels folder. I've tried prl-tools-win.iso and prl-tools-other. Using other, I'm at least able to install a better graphics driver, but the sound driver has proven elusive.

Can anyone provide assistance or maybe enough of a kick in the behind so that I can get the sound working at least? Thanks much!

Hello Sean,

Unfortunately, Parallels Desktop has limited number of Parallels Tools features for Windows 98 guest OS. There is only Clipboard Synchronization Tool, Time Synchronization Tool, Video driver Tool and Disk Compacting Tool.

In some cases Parallels Desktop can not install Video and Sound drivers automatically. In these cases, you should install Parallels video and audio drivers manually.

1. Go to Start menu->Settings->Control Panel->Add Hardware and click Next.

2. The wizard searches for connected devices. When the connected driver appears, click Next.

3. Click the Have Disk button- and then the Browse button. Specify the path:
c\:Program Files->Parallels->Parallels Tools->Sound/Video. Click Next

4. Restart Windows 98 guest OS.
 
To your point, I am aware that drivers may end up being installed manually. If I use the windows.iso, the problem is everything is buried behind the executable, and that executable cannot be run under Windows 98 (so as a result, all the drivers are buried behind that executable).

I had experimented with windows other, but strangely enough that only had an audio driver for os2.

Is there another driver that I can link up with, or am I going to need to find a way to downgrade to Parallels 2 or 3 to make this happen?

Maybe as another work around, can you tell me what particular sound card is that VM emulating? I know some VM's emulate a soundblaster, so that all I needed to do was acquire a soundblaster driver and I'd be good. In parallels, what type of hardware are we emulating? SB, AC97, Turtle, etc?
