question about sharing parallels with bootcamp

Should there be multiple hardware profiles? I only have one. The problem is that I can't get the keyboard or mouse on my MBP to work when booting in bootcamp. I wonder if it's because windows is trying to use the parallels drivers and they won't work in bootcamp maybe.

Anyone know how this works?

could you please tell me how do you shut down your VM? Do you use 'Start' -> 'Shut Down'?

Yes, form the windows start menu, I select 'shutdown' and then confirm when prompted.

I can't help but notice that when windows boots in parallels, their is a brief display that indicates it's loading some kind of parallels profile (I don't know what else to call it) vs a 'Windows XP Home edition' profile (again, these don't show up as hardware profiles, I just don't know what to call them). When booting into bootcamp it asks which windows I want to boot (or something to that nature) and 'Windows XP Home Edition' is the only option (whereas in parallels there are two (I am locked out from selecting them in parallels).

I tried removing parallels tools and the drivers used reverted from parallels drivers to standard MS ones. But it didn't help my problem while booting into windows with bootcamp. So I am starting to wonder if there are some kind of profiles that windows uses when booting or something like that. msconfig showed these too profiles (again for lack of a better word) in the boot.ini but then came up with a message saying that the one called "Windows XP Home Edition' was pointing to an invalid windows install and asked if I wanted to remove it. Even with its removal though, it still showed up as the option when booting windows via boot camp.

I am tempted to jsut reinatall XP over the old one, but my fear is being required to call MS to reactivate windows twice. Once for bootcamp, and again for parallels. Somehow I think if I have to do it twice they won't allow me to do it. And I also fear that reinstalling windows XP while booted from bootcamp will hose my parallels install.

please try to do the following:
1. Open your Boot Camp virtual machine.
2. Open Configuration Editor
3. In the Resource list, click Hard Disk.
4. In the hard disk settings pane, click the Advanced tab.
5. In the Cleanup Boot Camp Partition area, click the Clear button.

thank you for the reply! Unforuntately it didn't seem to make any difference. But fortunately I think i t rules out Parallels having any involvement what so ever with my bootcamp issues. My only hope then is maybe to somehow use parallels to access windows and somehow fix my non-parallels problem from there.

Another option is for me to reinstall Windows XP. My concern is activation. When I cleared the HD as per instructions, I had to reactivate Windows. but if I reinstall, does this mean I would have to reactivate both version (for lack of a better term since it's the same copy of windows, but seems to have different activations that originally required me to call MS to activate parallels when I first installed it). It would be one thing to call in again and get a new code once. But if I had to call in twice in a row (one for boot camp, and one for parallels) I fear they may not grant them to me. Right now parallels is far more important and seems to be working, so I am afraid of screwing that up.

I wish I understood better how the activation process worked or even why it sees parallels as a seperate activation.
 
Hello,

it looks like there is a problem with Boot Camp drivers. When you click the 'Clear' button, Parallels removes all its information from the Boot Camp partition. That is why it is probably a problem with native Boot Camp drivers.

Windows often asks for activation if more then three hardware devices were changed. That is why after switching from Boot Camp to Parallels Windows requires the activation.
