Rpc over Http

Hello everyone:

i am running parallels on tiger OS, with windows xp sp2 inside. i use outlook 2003 rpc over http feature to connect to my exchange server remotely, but it doesnt seem to work inside parallels. im trying to figure out where the problem lies- does parallels have a firewall between the OS and the virtual OS?

i run outlook /rpcdiag which gives a breakdown of protocols used, and connection states- but it just says "connecting" or "disconnected."

does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

No. OSX has a firewall, and Windows has a firewall, and unless you install something else, that's it.

No exchange experience so that's all the answer I can give you. Maybe a little bit helps though.
 
thanks for the reply joem. i have both firewalls turned off, still nothing. do you have experience w parallels?

I've been using Parallels regularly in production since build 1970 so I guess that counts as experience. I don't use any RPC apps so I have no idea whether RPC works and how well in a Parallels VM, although I see no reason why it wouldn't. My VM participates in my LAN and transfers large amounts of data now and then. The only problems not of my own making I've had revolve around features I'd like it to have but that aren't there yet.

Experience does not equate to brilliance though so I make no claims.
 
davidaf- thanks for your response. i have turned "require SSL" off in exchange as to try to alleviate the situation- no help... any ideas?

Sorry no idea. You are sure the website allows non ssl connection? I've only used a "plain text" config where we'd never allow a non ssl connection.

Actually, on top of those, you could easily have NAT action going on if using shared networking and a router on your LAN. That could possibly choke it, but I use a similar config and have no problems.

I agree with everyone on the SSL cert issue. 99% of problems relating to that stem from that.

go to /certsrv on the server and install the server's cert in your trusted root servers as well as the server's cert authority. That usually fixes most issues.
 
thanks storm- what is "shared networking" in parallels? anyway, im using bridged, and i am behind a router performing nat, however rpc works on windows, so im thinking it is not that.

i figured i wanted to take SSL out of the equation, so i temporarily disabled the requirement on my exhcnage server. unfortunately, this did not help.

everytime i try this in the future, i will have to rememeber this, but hopefully that wont be too long.

any suggestions on how to troubleshoot/diagnose this issue?

let me rephrase that last one: rpc over http works on windows machines outside the network, not windows in parallel in this mac outside the network (yiou need to be outside the network to run rpc over http). im saying that nat on the firewall shouldnt be an issue, becuase it works on other machines.

ive disabled "require SSL" on the exchange server, so now i am able to access email without usinf SSL. this is obviously not a permanent solution, but i wanted to rule out possibilities.

now that ssl is disabled, i test rpc on outlook inside parallel on the mac, i get the send/receive error: the ms exchange server could not be found.
i can go to the outlook web access website and see my email there, so obviously i can see the server, but somehow outlook cannot connect.

rpc over http is running over port 80 (http), so it doesnt seem like a firewall should be the problem.

as of late, i have removed and reinstalled the cert for the website, no change in rpc.

ideas?
