Running Windows program no longer appears in my Mac Dock

Hi.

I'm running PD9 under OS x 10.9 on a MacBook Pro.

Normal behaviour for Windows programs when they launch is for the program's icon to appear in the Mac dock, is it not?

I have been using Parallels for a number of years, and this always seemed to happen, and still does most of the time, but...

I have one Windows program that I use a lot, and so at some stage in the past I managed to set it so that it's icon remained in my Mac dock. This enabled me to launch that particular program directly from my dock of course, rather than using the Windows start menu.

Yesterday when I clicked that icon, instead of opening the Windows program it related to, a Mac error message was thrown up, (ie. not a Windows one), telling me that my Mac couldn't open the program. Something was amiss, I thought, so I decided to simply remove the icon from my dock, assuming that I could always right-click the icon the next time I ran the program and choose 'keep in dock' again.

But whenever I run that program in my Windows VM now it doesn't add it's icon to my Mac dock. I've tried running other Windows programs, and they all seem to send their icon to my Mac dock as they should, but this one continues not to do so. And of course, if it doesn't ever appear in my Mac dock I can't choose to 'keep it' there, and I'm having to open it via the Windows start menu every time.

I have tried un-sharing applications between Mac & Windows (both ways) and then re-sharing them again, but it has made no difference. The obstinate program in question, if it is relevant, is an old version of Microsoft Outlook. (Outlook XP.)

Anyone have any idea how I might get this program's icon back in my dock again?

ps. I have also noticed something else that is odd when I run this Outlook program. My Mac menu bar no longer shows 'Microsoft Outlook' by the Apple logo as it used to do, but instead shows 'Windows 7' there when Outlook is running.

Never Mind - I decided to try a couple things, and found that if I shutdown Windows/Parallels, delete the app file that Parallels creates that links to Parallels and the Windows app (which required I kill a process that had it open), and then bring it back up, it started acting normally again after it re-created the app.

Were you able to solve this problem? I just started seeing the same thing with Outlook 2010 on my computer.

I did 'solve' the problem, but I'm not sure what had been causing it.

Basically, all I did was to shut down my Win7 VM, completely quit Parallels and then shut sown my Mac. When I restarted my Mac and re-lauched Parallels and my VM it was working correctly.

I am seeing the same problem as you, some running programs not in dock. Rebooting does not help me! Any ideas?

Howard,

No, sorry. I only found that completely quitting Parallels and then completely shutting down my Mac and then restarting it cured my problem by accident. So if that doesn't work for you I'm afraid I'm at a loss as to what to suggest.

I followed the instructions for un-installing and re-installing Parallels Tools for Windows and it did not help. I already had the folder enabled as per your second link. This option does not solve my problem which is that a running Windows program (specifically my e-mail client, Chaos Intellect) does not show up in the dock when active, which it always did for PD7 and PD8. As a result, it is painful to switch to the program as it does not show in the "command / tab" list and the only way I can switch to it is to first switch to another active Windows program and then use "option / tab" to switch to Chaos Intellect.

I look forward to your assistance with this matter as I am frustrated and upset as I use this program all the time and I paid good money ($ 49.95) for this update based on your advertising that it offered lots of new features and was compatible with the new features of Mavericks (which was a free upgrade!!!).

I look forward to resolution of this matter.
