Screenshot is black

Never had this issue before.

When pressing <command> <control> <shift> 4 to take a selection screenshot from a Mac based screen
I could move to Windows based VM and paste the image.

now the pasted image is displaying as a solid black rectangle.

Looked all over the web, but perhaps in the wrong places.
It's driving me crazy, cos it's such a useful function.

I can successfully capture a screenshot of the entire screen as alluded in the instruction - that's not the issue.
I can't capture a selection of the screen into the clipboard!!! e.g. <command> <control> <shift> 4
I was able to do so for the past 4 years. Now something has changed and I don't understand what.
