set up for printing to printers on a network

We have a wired office network plus a remote wireless location for one computer using Airport base stations. I am working from the remote location. All works well on the Mac side when printing for any app to any printer. The problem is on the Vista side and Parallels - and I admit I have virtually no Windows experience.

Attempted to set-up Parallels by following the manual (v3.). Page 118 - Setting Up a Network Printer. Set Network Adapter Options as instructed. Not sure how to config networking in the guest operating system and it talks about permissions - not sure if I need to do that or how.

Trying to be able to see some of the printers on the wired network from an app - Safari, for example and be able to print.

Anyone give me some pointers?

hi,
as i right understood you want to see public printers at your network. I assume that this feature not working due issues with broadcast messages those not going through virtual adapter. Couldn't you specify how did you configure it? The right configuration for broadcast working fine is Bridged networking type.
 
I set it as the manual called for:

Device status: Enabled and Connected : cable at start-up

Emmulation - I have Bridged Ethernet set with en1- Airport

hm,
i have some doubts with using wireless network. Maybe it has some features with broadcast interoperability. Couldn't you to check printers search functionality on LAN? And one more question: you said that hadn't experience with Windows so how do you checking printing functionality from it? Couldn't you describe your steps with it?

"how do you checking printing functionality from it?" If I say I try to print from an app, is that the correct answer? What other settings should I look at?

sorry but i didn't understand from your above posts which app you using under Windows in view to test network printing functionality. You just said that using safari (as i understood under Mac OS X) that working properly. Point is that under Windows it's necessary preconfigure printer and add it to the system before using.

I was using Safari in the Windows, not on the Mac side.

Preconfigurre printer - maybe that is where I fall short. But to configure shouldn't I see the printer on the network first? Point me in the right direction. And I am thinking that maybe I need to buy a book on Windows.
 
Well i installed safari and went to printer dialog but couldn't to see there any printers because never anyone printer was configured before at this host. So at first (before try to printing from safari) go to the Control Panel->Printers (i speaking about Vista but you can have another Windows distro and this part of Control Panel can calls differ) and press there "Add printer". At add printer wizard presents functionality of searching network printers but here we must understanding one important thing that Windows can searching just SMB printers shares that were created with using or with native Microsoft tools built in Windows OS or with SAMBA server ports at Linux or Mac OS X. In my case for example printer that i needed to configure at my Windows host was a printer server with IPP interface. And i had to specify necessary parameters (single IP address as a fact) manually (configuration of remote TCP printer port depending from Windows OS version - at Vista it's rather user friendly and obviously; at Win XP it's necessary to specify that you are going to configure local printer and instead of selecting local LPT port it's necessary to specify "Create new port" and select "Standard TCP/IP port").
 
Have you tried installing "Bonjour for Windows". This is a free download from apple.com.

Note: This works great with XP. I have not tested it with Vista, but it should work.

I second the nomination to use Bonjour for Windows. My Windows application does not see the network printer (both in Parallels and in a regular windows pc). However, Bonjour sees and completely installs the printer in one step.

I also use Network Magic on both my mac and windows operations. Works great!

Using IMAC 2gb memory, Windows XP Professional.

I think I must have done that because I was able to print to my Xerox WorkCenter 24 even though this particular model was not on the list of Xerox printer (I selected another WorkCenter model). Used the IP address. So maybe it is working but the proper name for the printer and maybe the proper driver is wrong.

Regaring Bonjour, I downloaded it but didn't seem to have success printing. How do I use Bonjour versus above, or does it happen automatically.

I have 3 printers on the network. Two are ethernet wired, one is a shared USB printer. I am using Vista but just learned that I should have installed XP because UPS Worldship - the reason for doing all of this with Windows - does not support Vista. So I will have to backstep

Can I have installed both Vista and XP on Parallels? Haven't looked, but is there a way to eaily uninstalle one (Vista) and then install XP?

I am away from the Mac at the moment so I can not presently test.
 
2 Purplish and biglar: thank you very much for tip about Bonjour. I tried this utility and was very happy with this easiest way (known to me now) to configure network printer under Windows. (Note: on Vista it working perfectly too).

After Bonjour installation and system reloading go to Bonjour Printer Wizard and configure necessary printer.

yes, you can install into Parallels both Win XP and Vista. And you can have both operating systems at independent VMs (if you have enough disk space at your host system of course) and using both VMs simultaneously or one of it needing at some time by your selection. Guest OS uninstallation before installing another OS doesn't required. Just create new VM with File->New PD menu item.

Thanks for the help.

Looks like I am dead in the water. When I first installed Vista the Parallels install program ask if I wanted to install Vista or XP. Wow, I thought, I can do either one. Since I now learn that UPS does not support Vista I am back to installing XP, thinking that it must be included on the Vista install disk. I appear to be wrong. I purchased Vista and I have Vista. When I specify XP the install fails: "failed to load because this firmware (BIOS) is not ACPI compatable."

So I can load Vista but it does not work with UPS.

Guess the only solution is to purchase XP.

Back at this in a week.

Parallels Printer installation problem

I have a home network with a PC and a Mac Pro. I have a print server on the network with an Epson 2200 installed. I can print from the PC and have had success in the past installing it in an older Mac. I can install the printer on my new Mac Pro but cannot get it to print. My entire objective was to get it to print through parallels on the mac but I am stymied. I have done all the obvious thinkgs (I think) by turning on sharing and pinging the server to ascertain connection but cannot get anything to work through the Mac. I am not a network guru and just kind of bumble around. On another forum I was told by a member that he could never get his 2200 to work through Parallels but I am not ready to give it up yet. Does anyone have any advice?? Please HELP!
