Setting up with FileVault, how to best locate profile inside VM

I'm setting up a Windows XP VM on a MacBook, my preference is to set up the VM HD in the Shared area and locate my Windows XP profile directory inside FileVault. By having the main VM HD outside of FileVault, I'll keep maximum efficiency but by putting my profile inside FileVault, I will have encryption over all my documents including temp files, etc.

My first attempt at this hasn't work as I'd like, trying to use a shared folder mapped to a drive in the VM and then putting the profile there. I'm using these instructions to relocate the profile:

So my questions are:

- Should I use a shared folder to locate the user profile for Windows XP or should I set up a second VM disk (ie a "D" drive) and locate that VM disk inside FileVault?

- Other suggestions about how best to do this? I know I could put the entire VM "C:" drive on FileVault, I'm looking for other solutions if people have had success doing this in a similar way to I've suggested.

Following up to my own reply, I could not get this to work putting a profile on a shared drive, I suspect because the drive isn't "there" when the user logs in. I did get it to work with a second VM disk. In the end I decide to move the main VM hard disk inside FileVault in case I ended up with sensitive files (or virtual memory traces) outside of my home directory.

you don't say if you are using Bootcamp or a "pure" VM
- nor which OS or hardware

personally I keep all data in shared folders and only use VM without Bootcamp

which means if a VM goes bad my data is safe and immediately available when I delete the useless VM and open one of the weekly clones I keep as backup on external HD

I don't ever put critical data on line or on a machine so I have neither need for nor experience of encryptation
