Shut lid - how to properly prevent hangs/crashes

Very often after I shut the lid on my Macbook Pro the VM will totally hang. I've tried putting the VM (Windows 7) into sleep mode before shutting the lid with little success. What is the secret to not have the entire Mac hung because of shutting the lid while Parallels is running?
 
Anybody???

My machine hangs everytime I open the lid after having shut it. Nothing works except to physically power off the machine.
 
I have no idea what's wrong. Do you get the same problem if you put the Mac to sleep without closing the lid?
