I just installed Parallels 5 for Snow Leopard and Windows XP. Promise was more speed. I got a lot less--any program, like Word, Word Perfect, Excel, takes about a full minute just to get the blank page. Any click takes 15 seconds. Anyone know what's wrong? I didn't monkey with the Parallels 4 settings and that was probably 10X faster than this.

I've learned (the hard way) that the VM needs a lot of memory. I've given the VM 1 gig of ram (which basically kills the Mac side of things). I only have 2 Gigs of RAM, the VM gets 1 Gig of that, and Parallels eats up almost one entire additional Gig. So for mixed Mac-Windows work Parallels is useless for now. With 1 Gig of memory, though, Windows and Windows apps should run ok.
I am still using Parallels 4 with Snow Leopard and Windows XP. After upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard Parallels slowed down quite a lot. Starting Windows takes much longer and starting the only Windows XP Programm I use, takes much longer as well. When I read the above comment I wonder if it will be usefull to upgrade Parallels from version 4 to 5. Are ther any opnions our there to this question?
Parallels 5 Slowdown
I posted the initial post about parallels slowing down in version 5 with SnowLeopard. Out of frustration I deleted all the virtual machines, reinstalled windows and all my software. The good news is now Windows XP now runs faster in Parallels 5 than it does on my PC's.
The initial installation that came on my Mac was a cumbersome one, with too small an amount of hard drive dedicated to Windows. For some reason, it was unadjustable, prompting me to start over. The new setup is much better and the fringe benefit is it cleans out all those accumulating Windows files that do nothing but slow windows machines down. Well worth the half-day it took to do it.
