Smartselect opening Windows app in wrong VM!

I have two VMs: one with a virtual disk and one with my Boot Camp volume. I have MS Office on both. If I have the virtual disk VM running and I right-click a Powerpoint file in OS X and select to open with Windows Powerpoint, you would think it would open in the already open VM. But it doesn't! It tries to start up my Boot Camp VM, which I don't want. How do you make Smartselect correctly open the app in an already started VM instead of one that is completely shut down?

I have and its driving me nuts. It continually wants to open the unopened VM to open the file. Then I get the warning that opening another VM may cause slowdown, etc. I ended up removing the one of the VMs to temporarily solve this but its not a good long term fix for me.
I'd really like to solve this also.
