Stuck in the middle of Windows 10 upgrade... not sure what to do with this VM

So the upgrade process from windows 8.1 pro to 10 pro got off to a good start and looked promising, but then about 9% into the final install screen (black one) I saw a flash of "Restoring previous version of windows" then a disk check and now just a black screen with no activity at all. I'm running this VM in rollback mode, but not sure what to do now. Any suggestions? And is the upgrade to windows 10 pro ready for primetime or not? thx!

In order to complete the process please follow the steps below:
1. Download the .iso image file on the Mac side from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
2. Go to virtual machine configure >> Hardware Tab >> CD/DVD >> Mount the image file by Choosing the image file.
3. Start the virtual machine >> Open the CD/DVD drive and execute the set-up file.

Nope, even with the full installer downloaded from that site, I get the same results on both of my Win 8.1 VMs. There are a lot of things in common with both (as one started as a cloned copy) but they have diverged quite a bit over the past year or so. I am using Rollback mode in both, so maybe that could be interfering during one of the various install reboots? Let me report back after I try that, but I am starting to lose my passion for this upgrade. I did however have a very successful upgrade on some real iron (not this aluminum stuff) - an old Lenovo ThinkCentre that was running Vista. I got the box at a corporate firesale for $50 years ago, so I pulled it out of the closet and upgraded to Windows 10. Not one problem, and the thing is a screamer if just running office apps and the web.

not rollback mode. the install stops at various points when Windows gets to the black screen with the round percentage display, and is copying files before installing drivers. perhaps there is a log created somewhere that can help figure this out?

UPDATE: without rollback mode, the VM is destroyed, i.e. won't ever boot again, just goes to black screen. Had to restore the VM file from backup.

Could you use please running sfc /scannow on the Windows virtual machine before upgrading to Windows 10.
