I've brought Parallels in order to access some remote webcams with some awful software that only works on XP.

I have a PC laptop and I've managed to get that working with the software. The secret was to open some specific ports on my router and set a fixed IP on my PC for port forwarding to.

However, my attempts to mirror this success on the XP I have on the Mac using Parallels is proving a little tricky. I can get XP to see the internet quite easily, so so far so good, but trying to access the webcams just gets the response "All TCP/IP socket connections are in use".

I have a fixed IP on my Mac (Mac Pro/10.6) and I've configured the Virtual Machine to 'Shared Networking'. The webcam software (VCL Lite) was installed to use the 'network adapter'.

Could any kind person point me in the right direction as I'm sure I've missed something very simple.

Hi,

you need to try BridgedNetworking. In the Bridged-mode the VirtualMachine is seen in the network as separate Windows-machine. The bridged works not in all network environments, but it seems that your router will allow this

In Shared-networking the VM uses IP-address of the host and behaves like it is under firewall. If you won't manage to bring Bridged to work you can try to configure PortForwarding (refer to ParallelsDesktop documentation on this)

Thank you for replying.

I had looked through the instructions and thought that Bridged-Mode would be the best one to go for, but it seems to be greyed out for some reason.

I've tried the port forwarding in Shared Mode, but obviously I'm still not getting it.

As you can't seem to set up a single IP address I set it up with a DHCP range that didn't clash with my Mac's IP or my routers DHCP and which covered the fixed IP 192.168.0.70 that I had set in XP (Port fowarded from the Router).

I then opened the required TCP ports 15001-15007 using the 192.168.0.70 address.

Using the Apple System and Parallels Preferences I tried every variation of settings along these lines I can think of, restarting Windows every time and my head is spinning.

I'm convinced I'm missing something really simple but I think I need someone to go through each step required.

As I said at the start, getting the software to work on a PC was easy, but this is really like banging my head on the wall!

Ok, I've set the 'Virtual Machine Configuration' to Ethernet 1.

In 'Parallels Preferences I've set-

Connection type = Shared networking
Show in System Preferences = Yes
Enable DHCP Server = No

In Mac System Preferences Parallels Shared Networking Adapter #0 has the MANUAL address-

IP= 192.168.0.70
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
Router = 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

XP IP MANUAL Settings

IP= 192.168.0.70
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
Router = 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1


This connects fine to the internet but when I launch the webcam software I'm still getting 'All TCP/IP Socket Connections are in use".

As I said at the start, this is successful with XP on a PC, so it's obviously a setting somewhere in Parallels that I'm missing. I need to sort this out quickly now as I have to justify the purchase of Parallels and XP for my Mac.

That's fine. Exactly how it should be.

And this one is not correct, it may even block all networking.

I'd recommend to reset all this to defualt parameters. These settings has effect only when VM is in Shared-networking mode. So, settings should be ShowInSystemPreferences=NO, DHCP-Enabled=Yes, DHCP-Range=10.211.55.1-10.211.55.255 (as default). I believe that "Reset To Default" in preferences should do the trick.
 
And this is correct. IP-addres in XP should really be static with the specified settings

XP IP MANUAL Settings

I've carefully set up the system as you've listed it several times now, restarting XP and even the Mac at times. I can access the internet very quickly.

Unfortunately it still does not work with the webcam! (screen grab enclosed)

If I switch off Parallels and turn on my PC, it works straight away.

Is there any other setting that might be affecting it?

It may be a firewall. Please try to disable it:

Click Start, Control Panel, double–click Network Connections, right-click the desired connection, Properties, Advanced tab, Under Internet Connection Firewall, uncheck or check the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.

If this doesn't help, click Start -> Run and execute cmd.exe. Type in the appeared window command "ipconfig /all" (without quotes). Stretch the window to make all the output fit and without closing the window, click menu of Parallels Destkop "Help"->"Report a Problem", send a problem report (it is not necessary to provide description) and post here the report ID.

Also, the screenshot with output of "netstat -a" (from cmd.exe) could also be useful

Also, It could be helpful to see the output of "ifconfig" from /Application/Utilities/Terminal (executed at Mac)

You mentioning a Firewall got my memory going. About two weeks ago I tested Integos Internet Security Barrier X6 and it installed a FireWall. I had uninstalled it properly with the Intego Installer/Uninstaller before installing Parallels and obviously I'd restarted since then, but after all this trouble I did a Safe Boot, restarted off my reserve partition and ran DiskWarrior over my main OS and Parallels.

That did the trick. It now works fine.

Thank you very much for your patience and support. I thought I was going barmy at one point.
