Time Machine: Do Not Backup VM Greyed Out

I am trying to stop TM from backing up my Windows 7 VM in Parallels 6.

Under 'Virtual Machine', with no VM running, under 'Backup', there is a checkbox that says, "Time Machine: Do Not Backup Virtual Machine.

Unfortunately, this is always greyed out.

I have wandered through other settings to find some dependency, but have had no luck. Am I missing something simple?
 
Is anybody else having this issue? Or does everybody use TM to back up their VM every hour? I find the backups to be much too large, even with the 'Smart' option.

Appreciate any input.

don't know if you solved your problem. I just encountered the same thing. I solved it the following way:

1) My virtual machine is actually a shared VM between users on MacOS. I installed it as Admin in MacOS, but most of the time I am logged in with another standard account.

2) If I was logged in with the standard account in MacOS, then the time machine option for the VM was grayed out.

3) I quit PD on my standard account, and then I switched to my admin account, and started PD there. And indeed, the time machine option wasn't grayed out anymore, and I could tick the checkbox.

Not an option for me...

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I have compartmentalized my admin account, so that it includes no data, from my user account.

I tried signing in to my admin account and opening PD, but obviously it could not access the VM I keep in my user account.

you can also look at the settings of Time Machine.
it is possible to exclude folders.
your VM's should be in Documents - Parallels, which you can exclude.
