I'm trying to run TurboTax Business 2010, using Parallels, on a Mac Pro, using Windows XP. When I am filling out the information for a Partnership tax return (Form 1065) it crashes when I try to fill in the section for ending partnership percentage. The TurboTax people are telling me that TurboTax Business 2010 won't run on Parallels because there is a .net framework compatibility problem, and Parallels is considered a third party program running .net framework, so they will not be investigating further.

Anybody else having this problem? Or does anyone know if I can run TurboTax Business 2010 on Parallels on Windows 7 instead of XP.
 
what about just doing it on the mac side?

Is there a reason you aren't just doing it on the mac side? I'm assuming that version comes for both.

I know last year I had started my return on my old Dell & then put it on extension. In the mean time I got my Mac so I finished it in Windows. Can't remember rather I ran it in Parallels or direct in bootcamp. But I do have Windows 7 64 bit installed in Bootcamp & was running the bootcamp partition as a VM in Parallels 5 on my MacBookPro 13 in 2010. I think maybe I did it using it in Parallels. But I probably installed the software in Bootcamp. that is what I make a habit of doing with Windows software--install it in bootcamp but then I run it in Parallels.

Although right now I've had a lot of bad problems with the computer with repeated crashes with escalating problems & escalating fixes leading to it being erased 2x last weekend by the Genius bar. & then more crashes after reinstalling. Hadn't even gotten around to installing Parallels & after the more recent crashes they are going to be replacing much of the hardware to try to fix the problem. So not running Parallels right now, but I miss being able to go back & forth without rebooting.

I hope my last year's return got backed up. The Mac side was backed up, but windows had given me an error message so just ran a mirror back up & haven't checked whether it is there or not. after the 1st restore though the icone for Turbo tax was on the desktop but they said it was just the pointer (I forget the term right at the moment) rather than the actual Turbo Tax but I think it really was Turbo Tax.

BTW which version of Parallels are you running? Do you have the latest build (its listed at the top of the general forum with a link to where to download) & mine looked like it was checking for updates & would tell me I had the latest but I didn't. The latest build of Parallels 5 lists a fix of a problem with MacPros. Don't know if that had anything to do with it.

The other thing, another program that I ran on my Dell said it needed a certain version of net framework. Have you run Windows updates so that you have the lastest version of net framework?

I ran Turbo Tax Deluxe last year, starting on my Dell in XP & finishing it on my Mac after I installed & imported the return or whatever I had to do & that was in Win 7 64 bit, probably in Parallels although it was installed in bootcamp but I think I was using it in Parallels & it worked fine. But installed in Bootcamp where it was running native & then using bootcamp as a VM may work differently than just as a VM.

I'm running TurboTax Business, which is only available on Windows. TurboTax Business is the version that does partnership and trust taxes. For doing partnership and trust taxes, Turbotax has never offered a version on the Mac. But, for the last several years, it has run fine on Parallels. I'm on the latest version of Parallels, version 6.

Since my last post, I tried installing Windows 7 on Parallels, and got the same crash when running TurboTax Business 2010 when trying to transfer partnership taxes from 2009 to 2010. Other people where also having the same problem, but I don't know if any of them were running in a virtual environment. After TurboTax second tier support refused to help me because I was on a virtual machine, I went back and re-entered everything by hand, instead of transferring. Others on the TurboTax forums did the same.

Then, on April 2, Turbotax finally admitted that the problem was not because of running on a virtual machine, or bad installation, or the litany of other reasons they had been giving other people for it not working, and they finally admitted that the problem was with TurboTax Business 2010. They put out an update that fixed the problem on April 2, 2011. Of course, most people hadn't waited that long for a fix, and had instead gone back and started a fresh return and re-entered everything by hand.

Wow, that's a bummer & that late in the tax year. Of course 1 year I used Tax Cut & it was even later--about this time of the mo & it was probably in 2000. I got an error message about a July date when I finished Federal & started state. Couldn't figure it out & I'm in CA & their tech support kept East coast hours & really short hours for that close to the tax deadline--I think it was a Fri night within a week of filing deadline or so. So no tech support available except for online I didn't find the precise answer, but I found a similar 1 that gave me a clue. They had a note about I think it was a birthday & it had to do with switching from 2 digit years to 4 digit. But it wasn't in the field that message was about, but after several hours trying to figure out what that date was, I realized it was the date I had 1st put my car into business service on my Sched C. Of course they couldn't be so logical as to have the error message appear where the error actually was, or to have programmed it so that it would fix it when importing prior year. Decided to never use Tax Cut again, even tho cheaper.

I know last year or the year before they made it sound like you needed the business one if you are in business. It was hard to figure out what was included in which version. I just needed schedule C.

I'll have to see this year if I can get by with just TurboTax basic, but probably not. Need basic schedule C Plus have a couple of K1s to report but I'll have to check on what is included in each version--if I can find it. Past years they weren't always real clear on the contents.;

Anyway, maybe you all could hit them up for a refund or a credit for next year or something because of the hours of time extra you had to spend because of their glitch. Oh, 1 other thing I've learned as I run co software which requires Windows & also sync to WinMobile 6,5 phone, also for biz. They say they don't support Mac or dual boot systems, but like what you experienced, they can use that as a cop out when most likely it is just a problem. So I often don't even mention I'm on a mac. Last time I did after awhile & then the tech went into, the we don't support dual boot systems. All I wanted was regular windows support & if that didn't work, ok. But they blamed stuff on mac like when I was getting a flash player prompt on our website. They blamed it on Mac. Turned out, I was running 64 bit IE & on the Walmart site they prompted me but that took me to the Flash website which said they only had beta for the 64 bit IE. So I switched to using 32 bit. So sometimes better to just not even tell them you aren't running on a pc.

Of course running in bootcamp is running native & the microsoft store people tell me it is running on a pc.
