Ubuntu 8.04 guest in OS10.6.3 suddenly does not recognize mouse/trackpad

Ubuntu was working just fine in my Mac OS10.6.3 system, and suddenly it does not recognize the mouse or trackpad. As a result nothing in the Linux desktop can be modified, opened, etc.

Besides deleting the Ubuntu guest and reinstalling, does anyone have any ideas?
