Unable to get networking going

I'm also unable to get any networking at all on my new 17'' MBPro, with 10.5.1, build 5582 of Parallels and Vista.

I've followed the steps in this KB entry:

I've also tried the suggestions on the other recent threads. I've tried all three emulation options; shared, bridged and host-only (picking both airport and ethernet adapter for bridged). I've made sure that my Parallels Host-Guest and Parallels NAT connections show up as green in the network preferences. The only thing that seems vaguely suspect is a message below the Host-Guest properties, complaining that it has a self-assigned IP:

Looking in the system.log, I see the following messages repeatedly appearing (after setting up the host-only options as described in part 3 of the KB):

Any other steps I can try, or useful information I can provide on this issue?

Go ahead and try disabling your firewall, let us know if that helps. There has been some interference between Leopard's new firewall settings and Parallels. Although, it usually is only the case when you can use Bridged but not Shared networking; it is worth a try.

The other suggestion would be to un-install parallels, restart, install, restart and see if that helps any of the networking modes.
 
Thanks Eru, I just double-checked and the Firewall is disabled. I'll try a fresh install, (though my initial install was on a completely clean new machine, rather than an upgrade from Tiger or anything messy, so I'm not too hopeful :( ).

After the reinstall, I'm not even able to get as far as I was before. Almost all the time, I see the following dialog appear when starting Parallels:

"Parallels Desktop is unable to operate properly since it cannot communicate with one of its drivers. Try to restart the application to overcome this issue. If restart doesn't help, re-install Parallels Desktop. Note that Parallels drivers require a short time to be properly started and initialized. So you may need to wait a minute before trying to launch the application."

I've gone through the manual uninstall and reinstall process recommended here:

and I'm still seeing this, even after waiting 5-10 minutes after a restart. Once, I was able to run it, only to see an error about one of the virtual machine's drivers failing, followed by a kernel panic, log appended at the end of this message.

There's nothing recent in the ~/Library/Logs/Parallels log, just some messages like this from before the reinstall:

All in all, I'm not having a fun day...

Oh boy, sorry I bothered to recommend the re-install...

I trust that you have waited a few minutes before opening the Parallels app as the message has said. Do you see any relationship between Parallels working and opening other apps?
 
No worries, I appreciate your help Eru!

I do find I'm able to run parallels if I wait around ten minutes after a restart. The networking is still not functioning unfortunately. I'm set up with the developer tools and remote desktop if there's anything helpful I can do to help the team repro this.

But time for a martini now I think. :)

Ok, so it's taking 10 minutes for the tools to initialize properly... That's bizzare, there must be some sort of conflict going on... Which could be related to the earlier problem... Did you install Paragon by any chance?

Here are some thoughts, not quite sure I want to suggest them after what happened last time...

Judging from the first log there is an issue with file system access... Are you using a BootCamp partition?
Have you tried installing the latest version of macfuse?
 
Thanks for the lead on the driver problem being file-system related. I've got a clean OS install without Paragon, Boot Camp or any other customization, but I did have a USB drive mounted. Removing that and rebooting got rid of the startup error message, which is a big step forward.

That hasn't solved the lack of networking unfortunately.

Interesting... By any chance do you have anything else connected to your computer? Any programs that interface with your network adapters? Any programs that interface with your hardware?

I would agree, we have made progress since the last bout of errors, but we still have yet to scratch the surface on your original problem...

Here is another question, can you use file-sharing between Windows and OS X? How about copy and pasting?

Success!

I finally took what in retrospect was an obvious step and created a fresh virtual machine. After reinstalling Vista and the Parallels tools within it, everything including networking now works!

Thanks again for your help Eru, I appreciate it. I'm not sure what the initial problem was, except that there must have been a problem with the tools installation on my original virtual machine.
