Update hitting internet bandwidth from MacOS before doing update

I use a 4G connection to the internet, I monitor this fairly closely and noticed 4-7mbps spikes every few seconds. I eventually tracked it down to the Paralles updater process (v13.x) and now having run the update the pulsing has stopped. Not only was this consuming my metered bandwidth but all effecting the link latency which in turn made VOIP unusable. I've now disabled auto update checks but really feel the app should be a better bandwidth citizen.
