Upgrade to Windows 7 complains about 32-bit/64-bit problem

I'm attempting to upgrade my Vista VM to Windows 7 using a retail upgrade disc. System info reports that I have a 32-bit guest VM. However this is hosted on a 64-bit Hexacore Mac Pro. When I try to run setup.exe on the installer disk I get the message that

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

Any suggestions? Why won't the upgrade disc run? Is there a way to get disc that does run?
 
How can I upgrade to the 32-bit version of Windows 7? As near as I can tell there's no difference in the retail packages. Nor have I had any trouble upgrading actual Windows Vista PCs to Windows 7. It's only on this virtual instance that something seems off.
 
All Macs are 64 bit now but they can run 32 bit OS's just fine so that doesn't matter.

Did you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor?

Does the upgrade package include 32 bit or 64 bit or both Windows 7?

Did you try booting the upgrade disk instead of running setup.exe directly? Maybe it's complaining about running a Windows 7 app (setup.exe) on Vista. If you boot the CD which contains Windows 7 then it should work.
 
OK. Figured this one out. Turjns out the 32-bit upgrade disk was still sitting in my actual, non-virtual PC which is why I only had one, 64-bit upgrade disc in my Mac. The 32-bit disc worked eventually. Thanks all.
