luckily it was boot camp
Dear pableau,
many thanks for your quick response. In the end I was unable to get it working with the existing VM but luckily the VM was based on Boot Camp.
I created a new VM based on the existing Boot Camp partition and after quite a bit of fiddling around it's working now more or less ok. (no coherence mode though, even after successfully installing Parallels tools).
The whole upgrading process turned out to be rather cumbersome. Next one up: upgrading to Snow Leopard.
