Success syncing T-Mobile MDA!
I paste below my recent interchange with Parallels support tech, George Leary.
The solution to my problem may not help you with yours, but since it took me so long to figure out, I am posting it here.

Hello George,
Thanks for your suggestions. I installed the Beta upgrade.
It still failed to make a connection in Activesync (but DID connect to the
XP operating system, indicated by a little tone when USB devices are plugged
in. I also saw it appear in Parallels' Devices menu, and selected it.
I SOLVED THE PROBLEM AND YOU MAY WANT TO PASS THIS ON TO OTHERS TRYING TO
USE ACTIVESYNC:
When the Activesync window comes up and says "Connecting" forever, with the
green circle with arrows in it spinning, and never connects, it may be that
there is a dialog box that popped up BEHIND this window. How stupid is that?
It is smaller than this window, so unless you move the Activesync window out
of the way, you will never know it is there. The dialog says "This device is
protected with a password, please enter it." All I had to do was type in my
Windows Mobile 5 password that I use on the PDA, and then it connected fine
and synchronized fine.
I don't know whether the Beta of Parallels was necessary for this to work or
not.
I am delighted that it now works with my T-Mobile MDA, and would recommend
Parallels to anyone who asks about it.
Thanks,
Steve
