USB microphone: Recording voice

I tried using a USB microphone and while the device was recognized the sound it recorded sounded awful. Very distorted. I am trying to record a voice over in Camtasia Pro 2.
The same microphone sounds great on the Mac side when played back in Garageband. I've checked settings in windows xp but cannot seem to remedy the problem. Any solutions?:confused:

1. Connect your microphone to Mac
2.Go to System Preferences->Sound->Intut tab and select your microphone from the list below
3. Start PD, go to Configuration->Audio ->Intut devices and select "Default Audio"
