USB option missing in VM (windows XP), Parallels 4.0.3810

I am trying to attach a USB device to Windows XP. I looked through the posts, but couldn't find anything useful.

If I go 'Parallels Desktop' -> 'Preferences' -> 'USB', I can see add the USB device, but I can only select "Computer" as an option.

In the 'Virtual Machine' -> 'Configure' panel I do not even have a USB option as shown in many of the Knowledge Base articles.

How do I enable the USB support in the VM?

You need to have a USB controller configured in your VM, please see -
http://download.parallels.com/desktop/v4/docs/en/Parallels_Desktop_Users_Guide/index.htm
and search for "Adding a USB Controller"

You can add a USB controller to your virtual machine. USB controllers installed inside your virtual machines allow USB devices plugged into the USB drives of your physical computer to be automatically connected to the corresponding virtual machines.

Max
