USB Palm HotSync from Linux (host) to Windows 2000 (guest)

Greetings,

I'm trying to HotSync my Palm device (Zire72) from my Ubuntu Linux host to Outlook running in a Windows 2000 guest. Perhaps this is something that isn't quite working in Version 2.2 Build 2072 RC, but it seems to be almost working.

When I plug in and turn on the Palm, Windows sees the new device and installs it. However, when I try to HotSync, nothing seems to happen. Sometimes the device looks like it gets connected. Other times it seems to stay connected but nothing seems to happen.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions how to get this to work?

This is very similar to the USB printing problems that are being experienced. I remember some posts about Palm problems, but can't remember if there was any solution. Searching should help you there.

Any Parallels People Here?

Does anyone know if Parallels development or QA visit these forums? Since I'm discussing an issue with a Beta product, it seems like they would be interested in helping to find the problem and resolve. Does anyone know if real Parallels people hang out here?

BTW, I sent a support request over the weekend about this issue and I still haven't heard from Parallels. I know they say three business days, so maybe I'll hear something today...

They do read the forums. For some time now, they simply do not respond to known issues. As this is a known issue, at least for Mac, you can be sure they are working on it. A Mac fix would also see a Linux fix as well.

It's also been known for support requests to not be responded to if it is already a known issue. But that does'nt really matter to you, because now you know.

Well, I uninstalled 2.2RC and installed 2.1. I have the same problem. If this is supposed to be working, then perhaps I have something set up wrong in my host OS (Ubuntu Linux). However, the guest OS (Windows 2000) sees the device. It's just that I can't perform a HotSync. When I try to, the HotSync tool seems to "lock up", or become busy, because I can't click on it to bring up the context menu. When I turn off the Palm device, thus disconnecting it, I can then click on HotSync and bring up the menu.

I can't believe I'm alone in trying to get this scenario to work. Hasn't anyone else experienced this and/or gotten it to work?

Some more information about the USB problems I'm having. (Not that it matters. No one from Parallels seems to visit this forum and they don't respond to my support request.)

I have a Uniden cordless phone that has a USB interface so I can upload phonebook information. I can actually use this in the Parallels configuration I've described in previous messages in this thread. The upload/download isn't super speedy, but it does work.

It sure would be nice to have someone from Paralles either acknowledge they are aware of the USB problems, or at least say they read the messages in this forum.

I was pretty stoked when I first bought Parallels. However, the lack of support, the lack of ANY response at all, is really putting me off. :(

Well, I did a reinstall of Ubuntu. Now I can't upload data to my Uniden phone. I can still download, but not upload. :(

I wish someone could give some hints of things to try to get USB Palm HotSync working and get my Uniden upload working again.

It's like a ghost town here...

You do know now that you have a well known issue. You do know now that Parallels are working on all known issues. You do know now that they do read these forums. You do know now that it is extremely unlikely a responce will come if the community has already provided a satisfactory one.

Please try to accept all that at face value. They are aware, and they are working on it.

Exactly how do I "know" all these things? What is your position and/or relationship with Parallels? Why is your word to be considered reliable? (I'm not trying to be obtuse. I'd really like to know the answers to these questions.)

How are these things to be known? Is it stated somewhere in the forum policy? How is it that you know these things? Can you provide some evidence to back up these statements?

How do I know this is a well-known issue? It is not acknowledged as being one in the Windows/Linux forum as far as I can tell. I'm not going to take it on faith that they are working on it just because there is a lot of activity about this issue on the Mac forum.

How do I know they are working on all known issues? How do you know it? Can you point me to where this information is posted?

I do not know they read these forums. I see a rare post from them, but that doesn't mean to me that they are reading the forums. It would be super simple to respond to a thread such as this, which I'm sure many other people are lurking on to see if it gets addressed, and just say, "This is a known issue and we are working on it." You stating that they know and are working on it mean anything unless you are working for Parallels or have some kind of sysadmin authority. I assume you are a Senior Member because you've made a lot of posts. That doesn't mean you have the answers. At least, not to me.

I don't agree that the community has provided a satisfactory response. You haven't provided one and the only other person on this thread said they're having the same issue. I don't concede that this issue has been acknowledge or is being addressed, because I cannot find any reference to anyone else having this type of problem (Palm HotSync) on the Linux/Windows forum. Just because you have responded doesn't mean there has been a satisfactory response.

Why? This is a Parallels forum. It's hosted on their website. They even respond, though rather infrequently. What is your authority in all this? Or rather, how did you come to know these things? I do not know they are aware of it and I do not know they are working on it. So, I will NOT accept this at face value merely because you state it.

I understand your concern, and how it all seems a bit strange to you. But that's just the way it is.

There was a reasonable degree of my own opinion, and that is the thing I was asking for you to take at face value. Or again, maybe not.
