Using Outlook for Mac

Hi,

We are using Outlook for Mac as our default email client on our Mac.
For one of our buisness application, we are forced to use VMWare Fusion or Parallels to be able to run the application (since it is written for windows only).

Now the thing is that this application, it can create emails by the use of MAPI (not mailto links). So we would like the virtulized desktop to be able to communicate by MAPI to the host systems Outlook for Mac. Is this possible with parallels? We have not been able to get this to work with VMWare Fusion. In fact we believe its not supported.

Do anyone know if what we are trying to do is possible i Parallels? Or maybe with some 3rd party plugin?

I don't see why it wouldn't work in Fusion or Parallels, it doesn't have to be supported explicitly, a virtual machine is like a real separate computer that lives in the network, maybe you'll want to switch to Bridge Networking so the VM is on the same subnet as all the other computers.
 
I dont think you understood my question.
On my host computer (a Macbook), im running Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac.
I am also running a VM (Windows 7) which is running an application that needs access to a default Email-client to be able to create emails.
The problem is when this appliction tries to send an email, it looks for the default mail-client in my VM (windows 7) and it cant find it, so it throws an error.
What i need is the VM to recognize my Mac-Outlook as the default mail-program so that any email-creation started in my VM is directed to my Macs email-client.

Did that make it any clea
 
My answer still applies, could you do this with two separate computers on the same network? No. And that's your starting point.

You do have Default Apps (sharing Mac apps with Windows VM) in the VM configuration, which I'm sure you've tried it, and probably doesn't work either.
 
Hmm. Your answers are a bit confusing. In your first answer you say "I don't see why it wouldn't work in Fusion or Parallels". And then you follow up with an answer that indicates that it most probably is not possible.
So basicly im not very much wiser. Im still wondering if it is possible.

With parallels it is possible to have the VM launch Mac applications, so I dont see why Outlook would not be supported. As you can set files to be opened with a Mac application, i would assume that it would be possible to do the same with creating an email.
And from searching the internet i can see that several people are asking the exact same question as me. And noone has gotten a definate yes or no. Is it possible to get an answer from someone who actually know this? Anyone from Parallels please comment!
 
Forget everything else...
Does going to VM configuration Options>Applications>Email>Open in Mac and turning share mac applications with Windows on, work or not? The outcome is the answer to if it supports it or not.
 
No it does not work. Anyone knows if these is a feature that can be requested? This is a dealbreaker for my company...
 
MAPI is a Windows-specific API, it has nothing to do with OS X. To get it working you need some MAPI provider application installed in Windows, Outlook or Outlook Express should do it.
 
Yes serv, thats right, i need a MAPI provider in Windows.
The only thing is that i dont want to use Outlook in Windows, i want to use Outlook in Mac. So what i need is the MAPI calles to Outlook in Windows to be bridged from my VM over to my host Mac and talking to my Mac Outlook.

I assume from your answer that this is not supported?
 
No, this isn't supported, and unlikely to ever be. Primarily because it has nothing to do with virtualization, and besides, Outlook for Mac doesn't expose any API to bridge to.
I still fail to understand what prevents you from running Outlook on both sides and let them sync via Exchange server, considering this is business critical scenario.

Perhaps because that would require him to purchase two sets of Microsoft Office licenses (Mac and Windows) for every machine that needs access, which could be quite costly.
